I Lost/Found a Pet

If you believe your pet may have been found and has been placed with SWCHS, please contact us during our business hours. We will work with you to reunite you with your pet.

Animals that are brought to SWCHS as strays are not adoptable for up to one week to give owners time to locate and reclaim their lost pet. Certain stray listings are located on our Facebook page: South Wood County Humane Society Lost and Found Animals

You can view animals in our custody or find information on keeping found pets.

I Lost a Pet

  1. Contact SWCHS to file a missing pet report. Include information such as:
    • Name
    • Breed/Color and Distinctive Markings
    • Items Worn (collar, bandana, and/or tags)
    • Photo
    • Location Last Seen
  2. Post reports to other online resources other local humane societies:
Dogs – Lost Dogs of Wisconsin
    Cats – Helping Lost Pets
    Cats – Pet FBI
Cats – Lost Cats of Wisconsin
    • Tell family, friends, and neighbors.
    • Post fliers around the neighborhood.
    • For cats, place their litter box outside. They like their own odor. Dogs prefer a piece of your recently worn clothing. Do not place food outside as this attracts unwanted and often wild animals.
    • Continue to check our gallery of Stray Animals.
    • If you lost your animal and we contact you notifying you that it has been found, you will be required to bring a carrier to pick up your pet. You cannot pick up your animal without a carrier. A carrier is required to leave the building with your animal.

I Found a Pet

  1. If the animal has an ID tag, contact the owner immediately. If no ID tag is present, a local veterinary office can scan the animal for a microchip.
  2. Animals that are extremely sick or injured, contact SWCHS immediately. We do not pick up animals or accept uncontained animals.
  3. Cats appearing in good health should be reported to SWCHS as a sighting and then observed from afar (no feeding, etc.) for 72 hours. If the cat is still lingering, contact SWCHS a second time.
*Spring and Fall are especially common for litters of kittens. See our Kitten Season page for information on what to do if you found a litter of kittens.
  4. Tell your community about the found pet.
