Surrendered Animals

Alternatives to Surrendering

As we are not currently accepting any animal surrenders, please use the below information for reference at this time. If you have any questions or recommendations for re-homing, don’t hesitate to give us a call or send us an email at swchs@swchs.com.

Sometimes circumstances may prevent you from keeping your pet. Surrendering is hard on the pet as well as the owner. SWCHS is here to support you both during this difficult time. Consider alternatives to surrendering your pet:

  • Behavioral issues can make life with your pet very difficult. SWCHS can offer information and suggestions to help modify the behavior. We can recommend trainers to help correct the more difficult behaviors.
  • Online rehoming – These groups are not affiliated with or operated by SWCHS. Pet owners are urged to take caution when contacting these groups.
    • Wisconsin Adoptables or similar group keeps your pet in a safe and comfortable environment and prevents the shelter from reaching capacity and forced to turn away animals in need.
    • Rehome though Adopt a Pet allows you to connect with potential adopters free of charge.
    • Home to Home provides a free way to rehome your pet.

Surrendering your Pet

We are not accepting any animal surrenders at this time. We will update our website when we can accept surrenders.

For your information, surrenders are accepted as contracted by the municipalities or as capacity allows. To surrender your pet:

  • Contact us to make an appointment. An appointment is required to ensure we are able to accept your pet and give the care your pet needs to adjust. You will need your photo ID and should expect to fill out paperwork.
  • Bring any animal records, including medical information and birth date. We can then identify what care your pet has already received so that we can continue that care while they are waiting to be adopted. This helps us reduce costs and protects your pet from unnecessary procedures.
  • surrender fee will be determined based on your municipality and the pet’s vaccination history.

SWCHS does not euthanize animals due to age, time, or space, including surrendered pets. At times animals in our care, surrendered or otherwise, may not be able to be placed for adoption. This can be due to medical or behavioral conditions, quality of life, and safety. The decision to euthanize does not come lightly and every option is exhausted before the decision is made.
