Job Description:
Position reports to: Animal Care Manager and Director of Operations
The Kennel Manager oversees the welfare of the SWCHS animal population as directed by the
Animal Care Manager and in accordance with SWCHS standards of care, state regulations and
shelter care guidelines. They are responsible for the training and supervision of the Animal Care
Technicians and are the primary point of contact for all Animal Care staff and volunteers.
Responsibilities include:
1. Manage housing needs of individual dogs including kennel supplies and placement on
adoption floor.
2. Perform dog behavior assessments following stray hold period and develops
rehabilitation plan as needed. Continue to provide behavior assessments every month
during length of stay.
a. Train Animal Care Technicians to execute behavior plans.
b. Oversee canine temperament testing program with local volunteers.
3. Plan and provide daily enrichment for dog population tailored to individual needs.
a. Train Animal Care Technician to execute daily enrichment.
b. Maintain tracking log.
4. Enters all behavioral assessments into Petpoint system with detail explanation of
personality traits in a shelter environment.
5. Manage schedule of playtime between dogs and perform introduction between new dogs.
6. Manage dietary needs of dog population in coordination with the Animal Care Manager.
a. Alert appropriate personal when inventory is low.
7. Develop and maintain daily/weekly task list for Animal Care Technicians and volunteers.
8. Works in coordination with the Office staff to assess adoption appropriateness, arrange
dog introductions to potential adopters, oversees Meet and Greets and ensures that ACT’s
are trained in assisting in the adoption process.
9. In collaboration with the Animal Care Manager assist as needed in the operations of
feline care, staffing, training and adoptions.
10. Provide exemplarily customer service to adopters, volunteers and visitors.
11. Seeks continuing education opportunities pertaining to animal sheltering for dogs.
12. Participates as a supportive member of SWCHS management team to identify health and
safety concerns, temperament issues, safe and humane handling and adoptability of the
shelter animals.
13. Ensures a high level of communication/supervision with and maintains discipline and
prescribed work performance standards of all animal care staff.
14. Is aware of the dynamics of change process and works to ensure that all animal care
activities and procedures are reviewed and modified in an effective and efficient manner.
15. Assists the Director of Operations in promoting positive moral, creativity, and teamwork
amongst staff by establishing and maintaining a professional work environment while
providing appropriate leadership and direction as reviewed and approved by the Director
and Board of Directors.
16. Establishes and maintains a written equipment and daily operational supply inventory
ensuring necessary tools and resources are readily available to staff when needed

Qualifications & Requirements:
- Must have supervisory experience
- Previous animal handling experience and training
- Behavior handling training
- Must be familiar with Fear Free Shelter Handling
- Must demonstrate compassion and empathy towards animals
- Ability to work in high stress, high noise and fast-paced enviromment
- Position requires bending, kneeling, lifting and carrying of objects upwards of 50+punds.
- May include long periods of standing and the ability to handle dogs in excess of 100 lbs.
- Must be a minimum of 18 years old with transportation to get to and from work
- Must know computers and be willing to learn Petpoint Software

SWCHS relies on our wonderful volunteers to help make sure each pet receives the care they require. Volunteers work alongside our staff and fill many roles. Volunteers allow SWCHS to continue helping an average of 800 pets each year. It is a tremendous help if you are able to commit at least 2 hours per shift as many days per week as possible.. Volunteers must be 18 years or older.
