Position Description

The South Wood County Humane Society has an opportunity for a reliable, professional, compassionate, and well-organized individual to join our family as a part-time Animal Care Technician, working weekdays, every other weekend shift and some holidays.

Position Summary

Job Responsibilities

  • Minimize disease transmission by staying current on and adhering to animal care cleaning guidelines
  • Ensure excellent customer service focused on maintaining and improving relationships in all aspects of our client-related work
  • Maintain high standards of cleanliness of all animal kennels while balancing the efficiency needed to care for a high volume of animals
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of shelter length of stay
  • Ensure animals are provided with food, water, enrichment, and other daily needs
  • Ensure health of animals by performing intake procedures and following established procedures for follow-up care needed
  • Demonstrate safe and appropriate animal handling at all times.
  • Provide support to the veterinary and behavior departments by administering treatments and assisting in assessments as needed
  • Promote and model positive interpersonal communication and relationship building internally and externally.
  • Assist in facility maintenance by overseeing special cleaning projects
  • Maintain proper opening and closing procedures for the department
  • All other duties as assigned

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Formal animal care experience a plus
  • Strong attention to detail in all aspects of work

Animal Behaviorist

Job Description

Position reports to: Executive Director. 

Behaviorists will provide direct contact, interaction, and care for all SWCHS dogs. They will be responsible for the maintenance, cleanliness, safety and training in canine and feline behavior. They will also determine the behavioral profile of any animal in their facility that is being considered for adoption.

The following duties are normal for this position, they are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required or assigned.

Job Duties:

  • To ensure that all kenneled animals are properly fed, watered and in good health.
  • Oversees welfare of the animal population.
  • To notify the Animal Care Director if any dogs appear to be sick or injured.
  • Ensure that all inquiries in relation to kenneled animals are handled in accordance with SWCHS policy.
  • Behavior assesses animals based on the ASPCA Meet Your Match Criteria. As well as evaluating animals to determine if they are set for adoption. 
  • Maintaining a good relationship with rescue organizations, and other shelters. 
  • To take reasonable care of one’s own and other’s safety; to co-operate with managers/supervisors in complying with statutory health & safety duties; to report incidents, accidents, faults etc.
  • Provide daily enrichment and behavior modification for canines based on desired needs. 
  • Setting up surrender appointments for dogs
  • Train the Animal Care Technicians to execute daily enrichments and temperament testing.
  • Keeping up on canine/feline behavior and temperament through webinars and seminars.
  • Works with the Executive Director to create, maintain, and implement various animal care protocols and procedures

Skills/Qualifications:

  • Previous animal handling experience is preferred (3 year) 
  • Behavior handling training preferred.
  • Must be familiar with the Fear Free Shelter Handling.
  • Must demonstrate compassion and empathy towards animals and possess the ability to work in high stress, high noise, and fast-paced environments. 
  • Be able to use analytical skills to solve problems autonomously
  • Position requires bending, kneeling, lifting, and carrying of objects upwards of 50 lbs. May include long periods of standing and requires the ability to handle dogs in excess of 100 lbs. 
  • Must be a minimum of 18 years old with transportation to get to and from work
  • Must be willing to be on social media and attend fundraisers. 
  • Must know computers and willing to learn PetPoint Software
  • Must be able to multitask and keep organized.

Adoption Counselor

The Adoption Counselor will report to the Executive Director and Animal Behaviorist. 

 

Position Summary

Job Responsibilities

  •  Ensure excellent customer service focused on maintaining and improving relationships in all aspects of our client-related work.
  • Review canine applications and maintain continuous contact with adopters.
  • Setting up meet and greets with clients and processing adoptions.
  •  Answer phone calls and questions to best of abilities or transfer phone calls to correct extension  
  •  Answer emails in a professional and timely manner
  •  Assist in management of front office duties including paperwork, creation of Admission/Discharge folders, creation of adoption folders.
  •   Assist in animal adoption memos
  • Safely handle animals for meet and greets with clientele
  • Flexibility to assist in other areas when needed
