Iron Chef SWCHS was a smokin’ event! Nine of our community’s finest chefs came together in a cooking competition unlike any other to benefit the SWCHS capital campaign. The benefactors of the event were not only SWCHS but also all of the people who bought a ticket to eat the amazing food that was prepared by the culinary experts.
Iron Chef is a very popular Food Network Television show that pits two chefs off against each other in a culinary battle using a “secret” ingredient. They get one hour to use that ingredient in several courses and then are judged on their efforts. Well, SWCHS took this a few steps farther. We had nine chefs using the secret ingredients (announced that day) of potatoes, cranberries, and greens, all fresh from local companies and our farmers market. We had five celebrity judges (who were stuffed by the end of the competition) who had the great and very difficult job of tasting all nine judges offerings. In the end (and it was very close), Baker Street Grill won the first ever Iron Chef SWCHS competition.
We thank all of the chefs and their sponsoring businesses for sharing their talents and food. We thank all of our volunteers who worked tirelessly on the event. We thank all of the sponsoring businesses. And lastly, we thank the sold-out crowd that got to eat the delicious offerings of the chefs (yum yum). It was an amazing night, full of great food, great music, and community spirit that raised a significant amount for our new facility. A big “Woof” to all involved!! Iron Chef Photos

For the entire Month of May Club Forest Tavern will be donating 10% of their proceeds every WEDNESDAY to the SWCHS Capital Campaign. Make sure to make your lunch and supper dates at Club Forest. Or your cocktail dates!
How Exciting – the South Wood County Humane Society is well on its way to moving into a much needed new home for its community’s animals! In an effort to close the gap of funds needed for this vital move, we are planning an innovative fundraiser on June 10: Iron Chef Wisconsin Rapids. If you’ve ever watched the show you know the premise; chef’s prepare 4-5 dishes in only one hour, using a secret ingredient just revealed to them when the competition begins.
The Iron Chef Challenge has been met with much excitement from such notable participating chefs as Chef Pete of Jennings and Co, Chef Thomas of Holden’s Hideaway, Chef Kyle from Andy’s Bar and Grill, Chef Ryan from Great Expectations, Chef Dale from Baker Street Grill, Chef Austin from Engine Co 54 and many more. Excited diners are lining up to reserve their seats at one of the chef’s tables and the coveted Secret Ingredient has been locked away for safe keeping until its unveiling on the beautiful shores of the Wisconsin River during the June 10 Lunch by the River gathering.
Tickets for the event will be only $50 for a gourmet meal prepared in front of your eyes and wine served by Wisconsin Rapids most notable celebrities. Be watching for them to go on sale in early May.
Unable to attend and still wanting to support the event? Boy do we have a raffle for you! Multiple themed packages named for celebrity chefs and including an autographed item along with featured packages from hotels, restaurants and establishments, will be raffled off! Just one example is the Bobby Flay package (valued approx $500) including autographed items, cookware, tools from Bobby’s own grill line AND a brand new grill!

Petapalooza was held on March 27, with an awesome turnout!
The pancake breakfast brought out many early risers, along with a bunch of kids for an Easter egg hung and to sit and talk with the Easter Bunny.
Kim Kester brought out an array of farm animals for the petting zoo. Kids even had a chance to ride a pony and get their picture taken.
Throughout the whole day starting as early as breakfast, we had some great entertainment! The Brewer Sausages were on hand for pictures and a little race around the building! We also had the Assumption Lion Mascot! We started out with a local band Shockwave. They had a large spectrum of music for the breakfast hours. Suzuski Violins then came to play, what a talented bunch of kids! Then everyone’s favorite for SWCHS events, The Locals! The Locals are also a young bunch of talented kids. After the Locals played, Karate America came and put on a completely awesome show. Some of those kids seemed to defy the law of gravity! Blue Sky was the next band up, followed by Off Beet! Off Beet, was another young bunch of talented kids that used garbage cans and pails to drum on. They did an excellent job! After Off Beet Shameless played, then Shelter, Rattle Snakes & Eggs, and Southbound finished out the night! All the bands were truly tremendous! Thank you to each and every one of you! Look out for Shelter to be a regular at SWCHS events! Since the lead singers just happens to be the SWCHS director’s wife, Ann Hartley, and one of our supporters, Dave Farmbrough.
In the afternoon we held a Hot Dog Eating Contest and an Out-Of-Shape-Olympics! The hot dog eating contest was won by Jeff Vogel . The Out-of-Shape-Olympics games consisted of Pinball, Darts, Broomstick Pool, Wii Bowling, Ladder Golf, and Hillbilly Horseshoes (had to throw a roll of toilet paper into an old empty toilet bowl.) The Voice Newspaper Team took first in the Out-of-Shape-Olympics, with the SWCHS team coming in second, and the Wildhorse team in third. Best theme for the teams went to Animal Medical Clinic – for their matching shirts and great enthusiasm.
A huge thank you goes out to our major sponsors for making this happen: Wal-Mart of Wisconsin Rapids, Eagle Construction, Express Recycling, and Venus.
Thank you to all our other sponsors, helpers, and YOU the community for making this a very successful event! Thank you to all who bought raffle tickets and those who came out for our breakfast and lunch!

This is an annual fundraiser to help cover the SWCHS’s operation expenses. You can either get a team together to try to win the sculpting contest, or just come and watch the sculptures in action. Hot soup was provided by local area restaurants to warm you up after being out in the cold. Local bands also played inside the Centralia Center for your entertainment, with raffles, beverages, a room to see some of the animals that are available at the SWCHS, and also the Leadership Group was on hand selling the ever popular “Paw Print On Hope Book” with all proceeds going to the SWCHS capital campaign. This year they had about 15 teams sign up. Pete Jennings, Ben Jennings, and Justin Schmidt made the main sculpture for the event with a slide for the children to play on. Pictures are posted under the photo tab of the website. They also used the back side of their sculpture to pay tribute to a very special young lady that lost her battle with cancer, Lacy Laskowski.
Thank you to all the different business and individuals that donated awesome raffle prizes. Plus all the local restaurants that donated their signature soups to the event. We would like to give a special thanks to the SWCHS Friends Group for all their volunteers for the event and all of our other volunteers that helped us out.
